The bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the Marina Beach is regarded as one of the landmarks in Chennai. This black structure (statue), erected on a 12-ft-high pedestal, was unveiled by Jawaharlal Nehru (then Prime Minister of India) in 1959. The statue was sculpted by Debi Prasad Roy Chowdhry (who also sculpted Labour statue at Marina).
